Deux Moi on Instagram has been known to cause problems for celebrities, yet the anonymous female behind the account, the so-called curator of pop culture, claims to be “only sharing stories”.
This one is a doozy.
The gossip site has in excess of two million followers. So, when an equally-anonymous post on Deux Moi claimed that Johnny Depp and Jenna Ortega were seen on a secret date, the OMG! factor was just enough to ensure that the internet would blow up.
From a stats perspective, Jenna is 21 and Johnny is 60.
Strictly speaking, that kind of age difference hasn’t discouraged some Hollywood liaisons. There’s 53 years between actor Al Pacino and his pregnant girlfriend Noor Alfallah. But we can breathe a sigh of relief that the Jenna/Johnny thing is pure fiction.
Jenna was the first to provide an Instagram rebuttal:
“This is so ridiculous I can’t even laugh. I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone.”
Shortly thereafter, Depp’s official representatives closed the door for good:
“Mr. Depp has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever. He has never met her or spoken to her. He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be. He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumours that are intended to harm his reputation and career.”
As ardent fans of Jenna (and perhaps Mr. Depp, too) we should be a little irked that this happened in the first place. I’m one who believes that celebrities—even the most popular ones—deserve some measure of privacy where family and love are concerned. At best, these public lies are a distasteful side effect of their status as superstars. At worst, news trash could wreck someone’s life. So in the future, let’s not rush to hit “retweet” if that post seems too-good-to-be-true.
And let’s relegate Deux Moi to the place where it belongs—the toilet.
